I know, I know - laundry?! Who wants to read about that? But I've recently had conversations with several different people about laundry routines, so it's definitely something people talk about! I think this is a chore that tends to cause stress because there is always something that needs to be washed. For me, having a set laundry routine has really alleviated the stress.
I’ve tried many different routines - from doing a load every night of the week to spending an entire Sunday getting everything done in one day. My current routine kind of just fell into place one piece at a time, and it has been working really well for us for quite some time.
Thursdays
If I have time, I like to start laundry on Thursday evening and be done by Sunday evening. Thursday nights are for towels, whites, and miscellaneous (such as delicates). I like to start with items that will be ok if I leave them in the dryer over night (or don't go in the dryer at all!). Whatever I don’t get to just gets pushed to Friday.
Fridays
I’m not really sure where I first heard the term “Fresh Sheets Friday,” but I liked it and adopted it for my family. This pretty much speaks for itself - sheets get washed on Fridays! And anything that I didn't feel like doing on Thursday.
Saturdays and Sundays
Saturdays and Sundays are for lights and darks. I typically separate these, but might not just depending on the particular pieces getting washed.
With this routine, I only think about laundry from Thursday night through Sunday night. And really even less since I know what needs to get done on each of those days. I don't get the nagging feeling in the back of my mind because there are piles of laundry waiting to be washed (even when there are!).
But just because it works for us doesn't mean it will work for your family. Find what works for you, and as soon as it stops working for you, adjust it!
On a side note, the amount of lost socks around here is unreal. This little impulse buy of mine from a few years ago has turned out to be so useful!
Single socks get clipped on here until their partner turns up, which it almost always eventually does. I highly recommend having a place to keep single socks! I found this Hearth & Hand lost socks sign several years ago on clearance at Target. A simple basket or crate like this would work well, too.
Alright, it's time for me to sign off and head to bed - it's Friday, so that means fresh sheets!
xoxo
Erin
